Install Rubber Pavers for a Garden Pathway Makeover!

Rubber Pavers Make a Perfect Garden Pathway

Anytime is a great time to freshen up gardens and other outdoor spaces with the lasting beauty of recycled rubber pavers.  An ideal solution for almost any outdoor walkway, interlocking pavers are visually appealing and easy to install, making them perfect for DIY projects.

Learn what makes these versatile tiles, which come in four stunning colors,  a good choice with some design tips and installation know-how.

Pavers are perfect for garden pathways.

Creating a garden path can do wonders for any outdoor space. But if you’ve been looking around at the usual material options, you may decide it’s time to expand your garden pathway horizons. Pavers can uplift any garden pathway and do it better. The benefits of rubber pavers are many. Here’s why:

  • Installing or replacing cement, although long-lasting, may not work with your idea for a modern-looking backyard or landscaping project. Concrete yields a drab look and the installation process is not considered DIY friendly. Pavers provide a pallet of colorful options and provide a great project for do-it-yourself enthusiasts.
  • Some natural materials, like wood chips, may provide an initial splash of newness but can exacerbate some of the annoyances that can lurk in and around your garden. By creating a cozy habitat for termites, weeds, and even mold in your outdoor living areas, wood chips also deteriorate more rapidly and scatter easily. This is why wood chips, like other organic options, need annual replacement. Pavers, on the other hand, are not inviting to pests or mold and last ten to twenty years when properly installed.
  • Unlike other pathway materials, rubber pavers are low maintenance. Just sweep regularly and rinse occasionally. They also offer a durable slip resistant surface, providing a safer walkway in garden areas.

Design tips for creating an amazing pathway.

Replicating the vision in your head for a beautiful and durable garden pathway can be a challenge. If capturing your imagination seems difficult at first, start by asking yourself what makes your current walkway unappealing.

Are you looking for a bit of color? Do you want to expand or shrink the area? Are you creating a border garden along your pathway? Is the walkway well-traveled? Is durability and long life a priority? In any event, planning is crucial. Here are some other tips to consider when designing a new garden pathway.

  • Layout – Decide if your pathway will be straight or curved. You might consider both in your design to give your pathway an interesting flair.
  • Width – Determine how wide is necessary to accommodate foot traffic, carts, wheelbarrows and other uses while complementing the scale of your garden.
  • Slope – It’s important to design with slopes in mind to ensure usability, safety, and drainage. Be sure the slope is directed away from your house to prevent damage.
  • Color – Select a color or colors that will work with your overall design. Interlocking rubber pavers are available in various colors to suit your garden’s style.
  • Pattern – Rubber pavers come in several different patterns to complement your garden and pathway design.

Proper paver installation for best results.

If you plan to install pavers yourself, you’ve made a wise choice. These colorful, interlocking beauties are easy to install.

Whether it’s a curved garden path or a level and straight one, pavers provide a straightforward, simple method to add some flair to your yard.

Prepare your surface area:

  • Prep the Surface: Clear away any debris, stones, and grass, then use a rake and spirit level to level the ground to create an even surface.
  • Create a Solid Base: Compact bare soil with a plate compactor or hand tamper to ensure a solid base. A layer of crushed stone or sand can also be used to ensure a firm, level base.
  • Edge the Area: Use wood framing or landscape edging to create a restraint around your path’s perimeter to define edges, prevent erosion, and prevent pavers from moving or spreading.

Lay down your pavers:

  • Measure your pathway: To determine the number of rubber pavers you’ll need, be sure to measure the area where you plan to install your walkway.
  • Lay down the pavers: Begin at one end or corner and lay outward. Depending on the design, you may also start at the center of your pathway. As you lay the pavers in place, fit them tightly to each other and use a rubber mallet to be sure they are secure and level.
      • Cut for a custom fit. You will need to cut the tiles to fit around any curves or other obstacles by using a jigsaw or utility knife.
      • Check the alignment. – To be sure your pavers are installed straight, evenly, and with correct slope, use string attached to stakes and pull tight.
  • Secure in place. – Before placement, some manufacturers recommend applying a polyurethane construction adhesive to the back of each paver, approximately one inch from tile edges.

  • Additional tips for great results.

Take some extra time to ensure your pavers will be enjoyed for many years to come by following some recommended tips for success.

Fill in the gaps. Use sand or crushed stone to fill in any gaps between pavers for a finished look and to prevent weeds.

Protect and seal: To extend the life of your tiles, it’s a good idea to seal and protect your pavers from the elements with a good sealant.

Sweep and clean: After installation, clean the surface of your walkway by sweeping or using a leaf blower and enjoy your handiwork!

Eco-friendly rubber pavers will provide a colorful, durable upgrade to your front yard, back yard, and/or side areas of your property. Anywhere you have a walkway is a great place to install pavers. By updating your outdoor living spaces with a custom landscape design, you can increase property value and add to your home’s curb appeal.
