Have you noticed most recreational areas and play grounds in commercial spaces, schools, and residential places have rubber-specific mulching?
You must be curious why this landscaping trend has become popular.
Archive Market Research latest report reveals that the rubber mulch market value was estimated at over $872 million in 2025. And it's because more people want eco-friendly and low-maintenance landscaping materials.
Mulch made from rubber stands out for its durability and ability to suppress weed growth.
Consider this: mulching with a material that doesn't decompose means you don’t have to replace it often or worry about excessive weed growth. However, to keep mulched areas looking fresh, seasonal maintenance is recommended.
This article explores how you can maintain rubber mulch throughout the year to maximize safety, lifespan, and functionality.
Spring: Inspect and Fix Potential Issues
An ideal time for you to get busy with outdoor or playground surface maintenance is spring.
Your duties will involve inspecting surfaces for compaction and displacement of the mulch, which occurs in winter. Then, rake or turn over the mulching material to make it fluffy, with a depth of at least six inches.
The objective is to enhance air circulation and restore springiness or cushioning.
While rubber mulching is resistant to weeds, some can still grow.
What you should do is pull weeds early in spring and inspect that the weed barrier is still intact. Don’t forget to add edging to prevent your inorganic landscape material from blowing or washing away into the lawn.
Deep cleaning rubber mulch might not cross your mind, but it’s vital. Use a leaf blower to get rid of leaves and sticks. Then spray the surfaces with water using a hosepipe to remove buildup dirt and dust.
Summer: It’s about Depth, Heat and Water Management
Hot weather encourages a lot of outdoor activities, especially in play areas. So, maintaining moisture retention and structural integrity are top priority.
Assess mulch coverage regularly, particularly in high-traffic areas, like around playground equipment - beneath swings and slides, where rubber material shifts, scatters, and can be displaced. And be consistent with raking to restore the rubber's springiness. Something else about rubber is that it retains a lot of heat when exposed to direct sunlight.
Watering the mulch down cools it off and maximizes safety for users while eliminating dirt and dust off the surface to prevent fading. However, pools of water may form and cause the mulch to fade. So, check for proper drainage.
Focus on Drainage and Stability in Autumn
If left to accumulate, debris, such as twigs and leaves, that fall often during autumn or fall season can make inorganic mulch look dirty and lose color. Plus, accumulated organic dirt acts as soil, allowing weeds to grow on top of the rubber.
To keep your low-impact landscape safe and aesthetically appealing, blow or rake leaves and other organic debris as often as possible.
Besides debris removal, evaluate drainage flow or channels between your property’s roofing system and landscaped area. This means engaging in fall home maintenance practices like trimming trees, cleaning gutters, and inspecting roofs.
But why bother with drainage when rubber is dense and resistant to flooding? Despite its heavy weight, rubber can float away or sink in waterlogged soil when there's heavy rainfall or runoff water from rain and snowmelt floods the landscape.
Protect Mulch in Winter
One of the advantages of mulching with rubber, especially in winter, is minimal upkeep. Unlike wood mulch, rubber mulch material doesn’t freeze, absorb water, or become very compact when it’s cold, making it the safest option for playground surfacing. It’s great for insulating the soil if maintenance involving removal of fallen twigs and leaves using a leaf blowing machine or rake is prioritized.
Although the rubber mulch’s weight keeps it in place, inspect if it has shifted because of strong winds. Or if it has been buried by heavy snow, which can prevent drainage.
As temperatures drop, salt and grime from snow might build up on the landscaping surface. So, give your rubber mulch a light rinse with clean water.
When you mulch landscapes with rubber, maintenance becomes less demanding.
And you don’t need to replace the mulch until after a decade.
But should you ignore upkeep all together? Routine inspections are non-negotiable paired with cleaning, and maintaining depth for cushioning and proper drainage. Prevent fading as well in summer and improve drainage around your home during fall season for better performance and aesthetics.
