Rubber mulch has been studied extensively for decades by independent bodies including the EPA, CDC, CPSC, and Texas A&M University. All major studies found exposure levels during normal playground use to be extremely low, well below established safety thresholds. It's been used in public parks, schools, and daycare playgrounds for over 20 years.
Rubber Mulch is specifically designed to provide a cushioned surface for children to play on. It meets ASTM F1292-17 safety standards for playground safety standards meaning it’s tested to absorb impact and cushion falls. At 6" deep it protects against falls up to 12 ft.

Most customers report little to no smell after the first 24–48 hours. A minor rubber odor is sometimes present when first unpacked, but it dissipates quickly. Hundreds of our customers have commented on this specifically — many saying they expected a strong smell and were pleasantly surprised.
At 6 inches is the recommended depth for maximum fall protection (certified to protect against falls up to 12 feet at this depth). For lower play structures under 5 feet, 3–4 inches is often sufficient. Our configurator can help you calculate the exact amount you need.
Rubber mulch typically lasts 10–12 years under normal residential use. Some customers report getting 15–20 years. Unlike wood mulch, it doesn't rot, decompose, or require annual replacement. The color holds up well too — UV-stable pigments are used to prevent fading.
Like any outdoor surface — including wood chips and sand — rubber mulch can get warm on hot days in direct sun. A quick check before play on very hot days is good practice. It's not unlike checking a metal slide before your child sits on it.
Absolutely. Most families complete installation in a single afternoon — no contractor, no special equipment needed. You'll need a rake, your playground dimensions, and a free afternoon. We provide detailed installation guides and our team is available by phone if you have questions.
Rubber mulch stays put significantly better than wood chips or sand. It's heavier and doesn't float away in rain. We also sell optional edging borders that frame and contain the area perfectly. Using the border, most customers find very little displacement even over years of heavy use.
We offer 9 colors including Cocoa Brown, Terra Cotta Red, Painted Black, Unpainted Black, Blue, Green, Stone, Sand, and Hot Pink. Colors are UV-stabilized and hold up well over time. Many customers choose a natural look (black or brown) while others go bold with vibrant colors their kids love.
Wood mulch is cheaper upfront ($1–$2/sq ft vs $3–$6/sq ft). But wood mulch needs replacing every 1–2 years. Over a 10-year period, you'd spend significantly more on wood — plus the labor of repeated installation. Rubber mulch is the better long-term value by a wide margin.
